In the Polls

In our poll of 18 eleven and 12 year olds, the Conservatives gained 50% of the vote, Liberal Democrats 27.78% and Labour 22.22%
We asked our group “If there was one thing you could ask the new government to do for young people what would it be?

Conservative:
Darcy, 11 - Liquid envy clubs for our age
Emily, 12 –. Liquid envy clubs for our age
Alex, 12 –. New parks for young people to hang out in.
Ellie, 12 –. Shorter lessons and more flexible timetable
Ellie, 12 –. Free transport for children.
Martin, 11 –. Tennis courts near where we live
Phil, 11 –. More local sports
Megan, 12 - . Kids transport – safe travel for younger kids
Josie, 12 – more evenness in lessons, ie the same number of drama lessons as science.

Liberal Democrat
Phoebe, 12 –. More choice on [curriculum] lessons.
Ellen, 12 –. More clubs for people my age and less homework.
Ewan, 12 – . Time to go home at lunch time
Isobel, 10 – more action against vandalism
Poppy, 11 – make public buildings cleaner and nicer to be in.

Labour
Kirsty, 12 –. Free public transport for kids and alternatives to sport at school.
Alice, 12 –. A different prime minister to Gordon!
Tasha, 11 – more pedestrian crossings and paths
Issey, 12 – Eco friendly clubs and more stuff to stop climate change

We also asked eight of our 14 to 18 year olds the same thing, here the Liberal Democrats and Labour gained 37.5% of the vote, Conservative 12.5% Other 12.5% They replied:

Liberal Democrat:
Christopher, 17 –
I do not agree with what the Conservatives are planning for younger children and I do not agree with their plans for conscription, where individuals are being made to do community service which I believe will cause further problems as people cannot do the things they wish to do, which may lead one to dislike the Government for what they have made someone do.
Definitely to put more funds into schools so more educational material can be used by students. I would also like to see more resources such as computers put into more schools as well as more school funded trips to study educational sites.

Ellie, 15

I would ask the new Prime minister to rethink how the education system works, the curriculum and how we our education is based around exams and results. Also university, how now a degree has become less meaningful but still just as expensive. More people are now coming out with degrees, however more poeple are entering the work force in huge amounts of debts. How can this be a productive way for young people to be educated or live?

Nathan, 14

I'd abolish university tuition fees!

Labour
Ollie, 16.
because they have best policies for education.
I would ask the prime minister why young adults don’t have more too do. This would stop many of us hanging round on the streets.

Anon, 16

Introduce free (at least cheaper), reliable and accessible public transport for all young people.

Samuel, 18

To Reduce Tuition Fees to at least the amount they are in Scotland, preferably get rid of all of them.

Conservative
Jenna, 16 – Conservative.
Lower the age of drinking

Other
Vicki, 16.
Its all talk, none of them will actually change anything.

Magazines to readImage by Longzero via Flickr

Welcome to the first edition of The Fusioneer!

This is a magazine full of contributions from young people as well as news and information across the Fusion316 group. Its all very new here at The Fusioneer, and I hope you will journey with us over the coming months as we develop the magazine.

We have photos to make you think, this month relating to Lent, while our short stories show you don’t have to be 15 to write a story as our contributors are 10 and 11 years old. And wisdom is found through the hard work of university life, and Lady Gaga – it reminds me that listening to young people always was more important that talking at them.

This month’s snap shots of Fusion316 life come from St. Andrews Northgate High lower school cell group, the social hour at St. Michaels and a special Viaticus at All Saints; The Munchion. You will also find some information about things coming up in March and the beginning of April.

In future editions you will also find “Thoughts in Season” which is a short Bible study with practical ideas, but as we are in Lent, we are giving this spot over to the youth worker’s blog and the weekly Lenten posts.

Finally, if you would like to contribute or you have some news/events/information you would like us to add, please do get in touch!

Every blessing as you read

Karen Turnbull, youth worker Fusion3:16

My Cell Group by kristian

My cell Group is called `Christian union`, we meet every lunch time at 1.05
to 1.45 on Tuesday in Northgate high school. At Christian union (or as we
call it `C.U`) we do lots of activities including games, bible time and
quizzes. We win lots of prizes which are normally sweets!

C.U is a really good place to make friends, learn about God and have fun. Me
and my friends really enjoy c.u because we have ALOT of fun and we learn
about God. Since c.u started my friends and I have learnt about the
different stories in the bible, and c.u ties in with another group called
platform, this works well so we know more detail on parts of the bible. I
will continue to go to c.u as it is really fun and enjoyable.

Trip to Adrenaline Alley

After a recent trip to Corby Skate Park, we thought it would be a good idea to put an article in the fusion magazine.

We left from the Martlesham church at 9.00. Everyone was excited and there was a good atmosphere in the air. We arrived at Corby at 11.30. The park didn’t open till 12.00 so we sat around waiting. We got into the park at 12.00 and it was nothing like we had expected.

Once inside we all thought it would be all open but it was like a maze. There where passageways everywhere leading to different areas of the park. We all started by riding on the 7ft half pipe and realized it was totally different to riding on a concrete skate park. After about an hour we all felt computable with the riding surface and we all went our different ways. Some of us went and rode the bowls while others rode the street section. Unfortunately we didn’t ride the foam pit due to fact that it was busy and that it would take a couple of terns before we where used to the ramp.

During the day our cameraman tom got loads of good footage and on the way home we got a good time-lapse of the journey home. We all felt that the day was a huge success and we would like to do it again.
